Located in a 150 year-old artist-owned warehouse within Baltimore's Station North Arts and Entertainment District, AREA 405 is committed to demonstrating and strengthening the vitality of the arts community within Baltimore. Consistent with the goals of the Arts District, AREA 405's mission is to produce, present and promote arts and cultural programming by providing a venue for artists from Baltimore and the Mid-Atlantic region.

The primitive urban character of AREA 405 testifies to its long history as a brewery, industrial equipment maker and a window blind manufacturer and provides an alternative setting to traditional "white-wall" galleries. Given the inherent nature of the space, artists are challenged to re-consider the manner in which their work relates to this unique gallery environment. Upcoming Area 405 programming will include exhibitions, film screenings, performances, lectures and artist talks.

This alternative not-for-profit exhibition space is a vital component to the artists who own and work in the 66,000 square foot warehouse at 405 East Oliver Street. Along with the gallery, the building contains sculpture, photography, film and painting studios.

The industrial, working-class neighborhood that constitutes the Station North Arts and Entertainment District is located north and east of Baltimore's Penn Station. For decades, vacant warehouses and factory buildings in the area have drawn artists in search of affordable studio and live-work space. Designated by the State of Maryland as an Arts & Entertainment District in conjunction with Baltimore City's efforts to revitalize its inner city, the Station North Arts District offers tax incentives, abatements and exemptions for arts-related businesses and activities initiated by property owners, developers and artists living and working in the District.

In February 2003 AREA 405's inaugural exhibition, "OPEN", showcased the work of nineteen dedicated artists who had volunteered time and energy to the gallery. The show included sculpture, video, photography, installation, painting, and mixed media.

AREA 405 has an ongoing deadline for submission of proposals.
