A Night of Flamenco at Area 405

This acclaimed event will feature internationally celebrated Flamenco dancers and musicians in a traditional tablao style setting within the rustic character of AREA 405's gallery.

Featuring the talents of International Flamenco dancers Carmela Greco, Anna Menendez and Edwin Aparicio, accompanied by guitarist Richard Marlow and vocalist Jesus Montoya.

AREA 405 is proud to bring this distinguished group of performing artists to Baltimore in a traditional café style setting within the rustic character of our gallery.

This event continues Area 405's commitment to produce and promote arts and cultural programming in Baltimore's Station North Arts and Entertainment District.

Artists Bios:

Edwin Aparicio began his dance career at the age of seventeen in Washington DC and has subsequently studied flamenco in Spain with La Tati and Tomás de Madrid. In 2001, Mr. Aparicio made his flamenco debut at the legendary Casa Patas in Madrid. Mr. Aparicio toured the United States with Reynaldo Rincón's "Romería Flamenca", and has been a featured soloist, guest speaker and instructor at the Chicago Flamenco Festival.

Since 2002, Mr. Aparicio has taught master classes throughout the U.S., including such renowned events as Flamenco in the Sun in Miami. Mr. Aparicio is the artistic director and choreographer of Encuentros, of the collaboration Bailes Inéditos, and of a nationally acclaimed production Intimo (in collaboration with Carmela Greco), with performances in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

Carmela Greco, daughter of the legendary José Greco, has evolved into a world-renowned flamenco dancer and choreographer in her own right. She began dancing at an early age in Madrid, Spain, studying all forms of Spanish dance and went on to dance as prima ballerina in the company of Luisillo for three years, before founding her own company and touring throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Ms. Greco has performed for the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, and the Duke of Edinburgh, and has danced in all the leading tablaos in Spain. Some of the many places Ms. Greco has performed include the Joyce Theater in New York , Lincoln Center, Jacob's Pillow, the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami, Teatro Bellas Artes of Madrid, and the Seville Bienal de Flamenco, as well as collaborations with the Jose Greco II Company.

Ms. Greco has taught at the Amor de Dios dance school in Madrid since 1990. She began teaching intensive workshops in the US in 2003, and travels to Japan several times a year to teach sold-out master classes.

Anna Menendez is a flamenco dancer and Baltimore native based out of the Washington, DC area. Anna is a 2004 recipient of The Artist Fellowship Award from the DC Commission of Arts and Humanities. Her recent credits include "El Amor Brujo" featuring her original choreography accompanied by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Other performances to Ms. Menendez' credit include performing with "La Truco Flamenco" at the Albeniz Theatre in Madrid, Spain, The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, The Library of Congress, and The Baltimore Museum of Art to name a few.

Richard Marlow is the most sought after flamenco guitarist in the Washington, DC area. His credits include performances at The Kennedy Center, The Kay Theater at The University of Maryland, and Wolftrap. He has been a featured soloist on the John E. Marlow guitar series and is a published artist of Rumbas Flamenca, a style of Spanish guitar music.
