Dangerous Books : Pushing the pop-up

Curated by J.W. Mahoney

ANNOUNCING AN EXHIBITION OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS INTERPRETATIONS OF POP-UP BOOKS

This exhibition runs Friday, July 14th through Sunday, August 27th , 2006 Artists' Reception Friday, July 14th, 2006 from 8 - 11 pm

Dangerous Books features the works of Barb Bondy, Dawn Gavin, James Vose, Jens Westerberg, Jonathan Maxwell, Julianna Dail, Laura Shults, Lauren Schott, and Ruth Bowler and is an official off-site ARTSCAPE 2006 exhibition.

J.W. Mahoney is a Washington-based artist, writer, and independent curator who serves as Washington's Corresponding Editor for Art in America. He was educated at Harvard University and recently retired after 25 years as the Hirshhorn Museum's permanent collections registrar, and is currently an Affiliate Associate Professor at UMBC, where he has taught since 1996.

Each artist takes a fresh look at the idea of the pop-up book. Though steel sculptures, videos, and installations may not seem like the typical book, each brings a sense of wonder, fear or discovery. Located in Baltimore's Station North Arts and Entertainment District and called "Baltimore's best alternative space to view art" in RADAR magazine, Area 405 offers the region's largest exhibition space. At 6,000 square feet, this former industrial site is an ideal context in which to present large-scale exhibitions and events. This exhibition is free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible. For more information about the gallery or this exhibition, please call (410) 528-2101.

Gallery hours for Dangerous Books are Sundays noon-3pm and by appointment.
Area 405 is located at 405 East Oliver Street, Baltimore, MD 21202.

Galley extended hours are Saturday, July 22nd & Sunday, July 23rd (Artscape weekend) 12-4pm , and our regular hours: Sundays 12-3pm for the duration of the show

Dangerous Books is presented in conjunction with Artscape, Baltimore's 25th Annual Festival of the Arts, www.artscape.org.
