Kicking off our Fall 2013 program "Obsession" is Stanley Kubrick's darkly comedic Lolita, from the classic and controversial novel by Vladimir Nabokov.
The debonair and mellifluous James Mason is the hebephile Humbert Humbert, who is obsessed with Sue Lyon's nymphet Lolita Haze. Shelley Winters is the "the obnoxious mama, the brainless baba", and Peter Sellers is Claire Quilty, Humbert's wacky nemesis. With its irony, pathos, poignancy, satire and humor, you might forget its icky premise.
MENU
A Lolita Cocktail from mordo*
Vichyssoise with Parsley Pistou
Crudités with Sauce Louis
French Onion Burgers (Onion Confit and Gruyère)
Cherry Pie à la mode
(Our meal is a French-American hybrid in a nod to Humbert's field of French poetry and his disdain for Lolita's typical American teen tastes. Lolita was, after all, written in English and THEN translated into Russian. Nabokov said that Humbert and Lolita are a metaphor for his relationship with the U.S.)
