Film artists and founders/programmers of Baltimore's experimental film series Sight Unseen, Kate Ewald and Lorenzo Gattorna present a collaboration by the “leading lights of contemporary, experimental cinema”, Ben Rivers and Ben Russell.
A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness (2013) was shot on color Super 16mm filmstock amid the untouched landcsapes of Scandanavia and follows its unnamed main character through three separate situations. The resulting triptych explores themes typical to both Rivers and Russell: ethnography, alienation, and artistic and social primitivism.
"An art film that’s as uncompromising as it is uncommercial, A Spell to Ward off the Darkness will prove fascinating for those willing to be carried away by its gorgeous sights and sounds of nature, of merrymaking and music and its free-association approach to narrative and meaning. Mainstream audiences are likelier to run for the hills -- some of which are beautifully photographed here."(Boyd van Hoeij, The Hollywood Reporter, 08/16/2013)
